Are You Suffering from Painful Menstrual Periods ?

A surgical procedure of removing a woman’s uterus is called Hysterectomy. The uterus is otherwise called as the womb, where the baby grows during the pregnancy. Menstrual bleeding is due to shedding of the uterine lining. Sometimes, along with hysterectomy fallopian tubes, ovaries may or may not be removed depends on the problem. After this surgery, the patients will never gain weight and will never have swing moods as hormonal changes. The two types of hysterectomy are open and laparoscopic surgery which is a minimally invasive procedure.

If a woman has any one or multiple conditions as stated below, then hysterectomy is preferred. They are:
  • Cervix, ovaries or endometrium cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Prolapse of uterus
  • Fibroids in uterine
  • Menorrhagia
  • Adenomyosis
  • Chronic pelvic pain

Instead of a large cut in the abdominal cavity (traditional surgery) four small incisions are made to remove the uterus. It is also called as Keyhole surgery.

After making small incisions on the abdominal cavity, carbon-di-oxide gas is filled in the cavity. Then a thin, laparoscope which contains telescope is inserted into the abdomen through the incision.  Camera in the laparoscope makes the surgeon view uterus, fallopian tubes and the ovaries on the wide monitor. Other necessary instruments are interested through the remaining incisions. The surgeon starts the procedure by securing and dividing the uterus blood vessels which is followed by freeing uterus from the surrounding supports even the vaginal to which the uterus is attached. Once the uterus is removed the vagina is closed, the filled in carbon-di-oxide is released and incisions are closed eventually. The overall procedure is carried under general anesthesia.

Minimum blood loss with less pain, shorter hospitalization, and recovery, less or no infection after the post-operative session, less scarring due to the small incision and quick return to normal activities are the benefits of this surgery.
