How is appendectomy performed

Appendectomy procedure can be performed by either open surgery or by Laparoscopic technique. The open method requires a 2 to 3-inch incision in the lower right–hand side of the abdomen, where laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive procedure by three small incisions in the abdomen area under general anesthesia.

For laparoscopic appendectomy procedure, firstly a cannula is inserted to inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas that allows the surgeon to clearly see the appendix. After abdominal inflation, a laparoscope is inserted through one of the incisions, which is attached to a monitor that guides the surgeon to see inside the abdomen. The appendix is tied off with stitches and removed through the incisions. These incisions are then cleaned, closed, and dressed.
